NEC aid to North Eastern states

Shillong, Dec 01 (UNI) The North Eastern Council has allocated Rs 959 crores to the North Eastern states during 2004-2006 for implementing various developmental schemes.

The NEC had provided funds tp develop sectors like agriculture, power, water, industries, tourism, transport, health, human resource development.

The largest assistance had been given to the transport and communication sector with Rs 532.29 crores followed by the Medical and Health Sector at Rs 141.46 crores, official sources said The NEC had given stressed upon roads and bridges, transmission lines, employment oriented training programmes, e-governance and aid to medical institutes for upgradation, sources added.

The NEC had formed the NE Regional Educational Council to make education relevant to the needs of the region.

Three regional missions on Bamboo, International Trade and Horticulture were also launched to focus on growth sectors, sources said.

Besides, a Steering Committee on Security and Public Order, headed by the Union Home Secretary, had been constituted to address security and border related issues.

For disaster management, five stations have been established to collect earthquake related information with the help of the NE Space Application Centre at Shillong.
