Fake notes, drugs on rise in Indo-Pak border

Jalandhar, Dec 1: The smuggling of fake currency notes, drugs and arms has witnessed a rise in 2006 along the Indo-Pak border in Punjab.

A Border Security Force (BSF) spokesman today said the force has seized 56 kg heroin worth Rs 56 crore, fake currency of over Rs 17 lakh and 14 pistols and 15 magazines along the Indo-Pak Border in Punjab during the current year.

He said the year witnessed a rise in smuggling along the Indo Pak border in Punjab in comparison to the previous year which was evident from the fact that in 2005 only 20 kg heroin was seized while fake currency of Rs 11 lakh, and 2 pistols and 3 magazines were recovered during the period which was much less than the seizures made during the current year so far.

Besides, smuggling of poppy husk and opium from transborder violators in Punjab during the year also showed an increase, the spokesman said.
