EC warns bogus voters

Bangalore, Dec 1 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) today warned that anyone attempting to cast bogus votes in the December four byelection to the Chamundeswari Assembly seat will be punished with imprisonment or fine or both.

In a release here, the EC said anyone attempting to vote in the name of any other person, whether living or dead, or in a fictious name would attract the provisions of section 171-D of the Indian Penal Code. Besides, anyone, having voted once, applying for a voting paper for the same poll in his own name, and whoever abets, procures or attempts to procure the voting by any person in any such way would commit the offence of impersonation at an election.

Such violations would be punishable with imprisonment for a term which might extend to one year or fine or both, the EC warned.
