Curfew lifted in Pimpri-Chinchwad as situation improves

Pune, Dec 1 (UNI) Police today lifted curfew as the situation improved in the twin industrial township of Pimpri-Chinchwad, where normal life had been paralysed following violence over the desecration of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's statue in Kanpur.

Curfew, which was re-imposed this morning after two days of sporadic incidents of violence rocked Pimpri-Chinchwad, was lifted as situation turned normal.

Curfew was imposed on Wednesday when RPI activists involved in violence, damaged 80 vehicles including 25 buses belonging to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). As many as 25 persons including 13 police personnel were injured in stone-pelting incidents and burning of private establishments.

Earlier, district guardian minister and State Irrigation Minister Ajit Pawar visited the affected areas and summoned a meeting of dalit leaders and discussed ways and means to restore normalcy in Pimpri-Chinchwad, which is strongly dominated by dalits.

The police, however, said that after they deployed a company of rapid action force and security was beefed up, no fresh incidents of violence was reported.

According to Central Railway authorities, the prestigious 'Deccan Queen' has been cancelled on Saturday, while the Deccan Express which leaves Pune for Mumbai in the afternoon will run as scheduled.

So far, 200 RPI activists have been detained from various areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune, police today said.
