Clinton's pat for TN tsunami recovery programme

Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, Dec 1 (UNI) Lauding the Tsunami recovery programme being undertaken in the state as a model to the rest of the world, Former US President Bill Clinton today said efforts would be taken to make Tamil Nadu model part of the United Nation's strategy for future disasters.

Mr Clinton, who reviewed the rehabilitation programme at the tsunami-affected Thazhanguda Village, about seven kms from here, in his capacity as UN Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery, told reporters an effective partnership between the government, NGOs and private contractors had enabled the state to rebuild houses quickly for the affected people.

Stating that housing was the biggest challenge in the tsunami rehabilitation programme and only 30 per cent of housing had been completed in India, he said 'even in the US, a year after Hurricane Katrina, people were still living in tents.
