New Delhi, Dec 1 (UNI) In a landmark event signalling burgeoning Indo-Brazil defence relations, Commandant of the Brazilian Army Gen Francisco Roberto De Albuquerque commences a weeklong visit to India next Sunday.

The visit -- the first by a Brazilian Army Chief - reciprocates Indian Army Chief General JJ Singh's visit to Brazil in May earlier this year.

The visit by the Brazilian Army Chief -- from December 3 to 9 -- not only carries forward the impetus given by Gen JJ Singh's visit earlier this year but is also expected to lend impetus to bilateral exchange of each other's expertise in their respective areas of core competence to enhance the ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries.

According to an official spokesperson here, Gen Albuquerque will be visiting the BrahMos Aerospace company here, the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Mizoram and the Eastern Command Headquarters in Kolkata.

Visits to Srinagar and Agra have also been programmed.

In addition, Gen Albuquerque will also be calling on Defence Minister AK Antony, the three Service Chiefs and Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt. There will be discussions on mutual cooperation, training for UN operations, mountain and jungle warfare, sports and adventure activities and interaction between strategic think-tanks on either side, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson observed that Defence cooperation, as a part of diplomacy, was an important tool to enhance national security in consonance with other key players.

Of late, countries from South America have evinced keen interest in interacting with the Indian Army, especially due to its reputed training institutions and its rich operational experience -- both in conventional and sub-conventional warfare.

Recognising the growing convergence and mutual concerns of both nations, the Indian Government has approved deputing of a Defence Attache in Brasilia. The positioning of the Attache will further assist in coordinating and executing the agreed activities of these visits. The recent exchange of high-level visits between the two Armies will foster the bilateral relationship into a mutually beneficial partnership.
