Banks write off over Rs 5000 cr NPA

New Delhi, Dec 1: The Nationalised Banks have written off non-performing assets (NPA) to the tune of Rs 5172 crores in the yaer 2005-06,the Lok Sabha was informed today.

Minister of State for Finance Pawan Kumar Bansal said in a written answer that the NPAs written off in the previous years amounted to Rs 4416 crores in 2002-03,Rs 6328 crores in 2003-04 and Rs 6108 crores in 2004-05.

At the end of March 2006,the Gross NPAs of nationalised banks in agriculture sector were Rs 3898.88 crores.

This constituted 13.83 per cent of the gross NPA of nationalised banks in percentage terms,the Minister said.
