356 AIDS cases detected in Asom

Guwahati, Dec 1 (UNI) About 356 cases of AIDS have been detected in Asom till October this year, of which 355 are male.

Talking to mediapersons yesterday, Asom Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed the data saying, ''Unlike neighbouring states of Manipur and Nagaland, which have been declared the most vulnerable states with 2866 and 736 known cases of AIDS respectively, Asom is not a vulnerable state. The state government is taking all possible measures to stop spreading of this disease.'' Out of the total number of AIDS cases, 383 cases had been transmitted through sexual intercourse, he added.

Speaking on the eve of World AIDS Day here yesterday, Dr Sarma further said as per data available till June 2005, Tamil Nadu stood first with highest number of AIDS cases that is 52036 followed by Maharashtra with 13747 and Andhra Pradesh with 12349 cases.

He said Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi would announce the State Policy on AIDS here tomorrow.

Kamrup district in Asom is having highest number of AIDS cases with 249 followed by Nagaon with 24 and Golaghat with 21 cases, he revealed.

He said the National Aids Control Programme was launched in the state in two phases. The first phase was launched in 1992 to 1997 and extended upto 1998. The second phase launched in 1999 and was still continuing. The Asom State AIDS Control Society(ASACS) was set up in 1992.

''There are 21 Targeted Intervention projects under implementation through NGOs partnes in the state till now and 36 new TI projects have been planned in this financial year. Process of selection of the NGOs for the projects has already started,'' the minister said.

Action plan has been prepared for training, he said.

Two Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) have been started in the Guwahati Medical College, where Antiretroviral Drugs are given free of cost as per the NACO directives. One new ART centre would be established in Silchar Medical college soon, he added.

Asom Chief Minister would inaugurate a trainers' training programme here today. Over 15,000 women workers would be trained in the state, he added.
