Tamil Nadu, Mumbai qualify from Elite group A

Jamshedpur, Nov 30 (UNI) Despite losing to Mumbai by 70 runs in the final group league match, Tamil Nadu emerged group champions while Mumbai also qualified as the second team from Elite group A of their Cooch Behar trophy tie here today.

Tamil Nadu bagged nine points with one win and two draws to top the table while Mumbai also won one match and drawn two matches. But one bonus points in favour of Tamil Nadu made the difference and Mumbai had to satisfy with eight points.

Mumbai, after taking a first innings lead of 137 runs, resumed at 66 for two this morning and declared at 156 for six with handsome contributions from S Damle (38) and I Abdullah (27). Mumbai took overall 293 runs lead.

M Prabhu and S Martin scaled three and two wickets respectivley.

Chasing 294 for an outright win Tamil Nadu were all out for 223 runs in their second innings.

Despite two half-centuries by K H Gopinath(68) and Sanjeev Martin (52) and a solid 41 by Abhinav Mukund Tamil Nadu fell well short of the target.

Left arm spinner I Abdullah was the most successful bowler for Mumbai taking four wickets for 45 runs.

In another match of the group between Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh ended in a draw as the former collected two points on the basis of 84 runsfirst innings lead.

Maharashtra resumed with over night 256 for six,were all out for 327 in their first innings as Ganesh Gaekwad scored a fine 127 with the help of 15 boundaries.

Uttar pradesh were 164 for four when the match was called off.

Brief score : Mumbai : 364 all out and 156 for six declared.

Tamil Nadu : 227 all out and 223 all out.

Mumbai won by 70 runs.

Uttar Pradesh : 243 all out and 164 for 4.

Maharashtra :327 all out Match drawn.
