Seven farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha

Nagpur, Nov 30 (UNI) Seven debt-ridden farmers committed suicide in Vidarbha yesterday, activists have said.

According to Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation working for farmers in the region, the deceased included two from Akola district and one each from Wardha, Chandrapur, Gondia, Washim and Buldhana districts.

This has taken the number of farmers suicides in November to 102, VJAS said in a release here today. The number of farmers who ended their lives in Vidarbha since June 2005 had touched 1,147, which included 539 since the announcement of the Prime Minister's relief package on July 1 last, the release said.

According to VJAS, 124 farmers suicides were reported in Vidarbha in September and 112 in October this year.
