Punjab gives free power BPL families

Chandigarh, Nov 30 (UNI) The Punjab government today decided to extend the benefit of 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumption to all the 4.44 lakh below poverty line (BPL) families of the state with immediate effect.

Announcing this here today, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said the decision was taken in view of the long-pending demand of the 'poorest of the poor' families belonging to the backward classes and other economically weaker sections of the society.

He said the decision was likely to cover 3.19 lakh families in the rural areas and 1.25 lakh families in the urban areas.

The state government was likely to pay additional subsidy of Rs 120 crore per annum to the PSEB on this account.
