Puducherry administration to vaccinate cattle

Puducherry, Nov 30 (UNI) With the symptoms of foot and mouth disease among cattle being reported from certain areas, the Puducherry administration would organise camps in all the communes in the Union Territory region of Karaikal to vaccinate all the cattles, Minister for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry V Vaithilingam said today.

Addressing a press conference here Mr Vaithilingam said the symptoms of the disease were reported from Ariyankuppam, Madagadippattu and also from Karaikal region and the those areas had already undergone vaccination process.

He said there were about 45,000 cows and 1,500 buffaloes in Puducherry as against 5,000 and 800 in Karaikal region, and the vaccine, which would cost Rs one crore, was being given free of cost under the centrally sponsored scheme.

Mr Vaithilingam said the milk production in the Union Territory for 2005-06 was put at 42,000 MT and the target this year was 45,000 MT.

There was no cold war between the Secretary and the Director and applications for poultry farming and cattle rearing was being provided with subsidy and would be soon implemented.
