Opening of speed Post Centres is demand based: Maran
New Delhi, Nov 30 (UNI) Communications and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran today informed the Rajya Sabha that there were 1,068 Speed Post centres in the country, and more centres would be opened depending on the demand in cities.
He said people to people mail was reducing day by day and business to business was increasing and the process for opening more centres was based on the demand.
On the issue of ombudsman, Mr Maran said the department felt that the office of ombudsman was useless as they did not have any power to penalise.
Consumers can always appeal to the TDSAT, he added.
In India, telecom revolution was taking place and the TRAI is coming out with guidelines for quality service, billing system and other facilities.
Mr Maran further said that FDI in telecom is allowed upto 74 per cent.
On the Hutchison-Essar issue, the Minister said that FIPB has taken notice and was taking a holistic view.
