Maharashtra, TN joint winners in school games
Ferozepur, Nov 30 (UNI) Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu were declared joint winners with 21 points apiece in the first National Inter-School Tournament for boys and girls under-16 Group-2 at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium here today.
The overall champions will be declared at the conclusion of the Group I competitions scheduled from December 7 to 10. The overall winners will receive a cash award of Rs one lakh.
Tamil Nadu were declared winners in football (girls), table tennis (boys) and weightlifting (boys).
Maharashtra girls emerged winners in weightlifting and wrestling.
Tamil Nadu were also runners-up in volleyball whereas Maharashtra got runners-up positions in table tennis (boys and girls) and wrestling (boys). Tamil Nadu obtained third positions in girls volleyball, table tennis and weightlifting. Maharashtra got third place in football(girls) and weightlifting(boys).
Hosts Punjab finished runners-up with 19 points. They finished top in table tennis(girls) team championship, four runners-up positions in football l(boys), weightlifting (boys and girls) and wrestling (girls). Punjab secured third position in table tennis (boys) and wrestling (boys).
In football girls finals Tamil Nadu defeated Kerala by 1-0.
Radhika scored the all-important goal in the 74th minute. The bronze medal went to Maharashtra.
In volleyball boys finals Haryana won the gold by defeating Tamil Nadu 3-0. The bronze medal went to Orissa.
Bathinda Zone Inspector General of Police Rajinder Singh was the chief guest and he gave away the prizes.
Speaking on the occasion, he inspired the young players to play the game in the spirit of the game and for the national integrity.
