HC notice to Centre, state governments on political ads

Chandigarh, Nov 30 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked the Centre, as well as the state governments of Punjab and Haryana to file an affidavit within four weeks to explain under what provisions of law the public money was being spent on advertisements that resulted in the publicity of certain class of persons.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court Division Bench of Chief Justice Vijendra Kumar Jain and Justice S S Nijjar today gave the direction during resumed hearing on the PIL filed by advocate H C Arora seeking directions to recover from the advertisers the amount spent from public funds towards political advertisements wherein photographs of chief ministers, ministers, MPs, MLAs etc. were published in newspapers.

The matter has now been fixed for further hearing on February one, next year.
