Colliery workers trapped, six dead

Durgapur, Nov 30 (UNI) At least six people died after they were trapped in the Chanchali colliery mines near here today, according to official sources.

The incident took place during the wee hours at Chanchali colliery of the Eastern Coalfields limited, sources said.

A rescue team of five members had reached the spot and recovered the bodies of the victims.

Asansol MP Bangsagopal Chowdhary has alleged that the ECL authorities were not taking appropriate measures to check the ongoing illegal mining here.

The police have reached the spot and have started conducting investigation.

However, the ECL authorites were tightlipped on the whole issue and have not yet confirmed the total number of workers present in the mines when the incident took place.
