BSF intercepts 776 Bangladeshi nationals

Shillong, Nov 30 (UNI) BSF officials today said they have intercepted about 776 Bangladeshi nationals while trying to sneak into Asom, Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland borders during the past one year.

Of the 776 illegal migrants, 754 had been handed over to the local police and 22 to the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) on charges of inadvertent crossing, a BSF press communique said here ahead of the BSF's 4nd Raising Day tomorrow.

The statement said many of the arrested people had been deported to Bangladesh through BSF-BDR flag meetings.

The BSF had also seized contraband goods worth more than Rs 8.5 crore, including forest produce worth Rs 2.4 crore, narcotics worth Rs 70.9 lakh and cattle worth Rs 1.9 crore, from the Indo-Bangla border, the release stated.

The BSF jawans said they had also seized fake Indian currency notes of Rs 33000, which was being pumped into the country from Bangladesh.

The release further stated that about 35 militants of several underground outfits were apprehended during various operations of the BSF.
