Tension in Kanpur after Ambedkar statue desecrated

Lucknow, Nov 29 (UNI) Security has been tightened in Kanpur city of Uttar Pradesh after tension brewed over desecration of a statue of B R Ambedkar Ambedkar in Kakadev area last night.

The trouble started this morning when locals found the statue descrated. The agitating locals, including workers of political parties, staged a dharna to protest against the incident and demanded action vagainst the guilty.

The district administration swing into action and tried to placate the agitated crowd shouting provocative slogans.

''It was apparently the handiwork of some anti-social elements who wanted to create social tension,''the District Police Chief P C Meena told UNI over the phone from Kanpur.

He said a new statue was being installed and the situation had been brought under control.

A case in this regard has been regsitered and efforts were on to nab the culprits.
