Student sues IGNOU for supply of study material
New Delhi, Nov 29 (UNI) The Delhi High Court today issued notice to the Indira Gandhi National Open University(IGNOU) on the petition of a student seeking direction to the university to supply him with study material to pursue his M A (Sociology) course.
Justice Anil Kumar directed the University, which imparts education through correspondence courses, to file its reply in an affidavit by March 15, the next date of hearing.
Amar Bahadur Ghartimagar, a student of M A (Sociology, Hindi medium), submitted a petition claiming that he was not provided with the study material despite sending six reminders to the university authorities through e-mail in October and November, 2006.
The petition filed by counsel Ashok Agrwal said the students are required to submit their assignments and projects by December 31, 2006 and March 31, 2007 respectively, but are yet to receive the study materials.
Like Ghartimagar, other students such as -- Preeti Verma, Mamta, Shashikar Bhardwaj, Manju Sharma-- had paid Rs 2800 to the university and thereby the institution was obliged to supply the study material, said the petition.
The petitioner had sought the direction of the court for the supply of the study material at the earliest so that the students could start their studies.
