Majuli's Sattra Mahasabha demands heritage status

New Delhi, Nov 29 (UNI) A delegation of the Sattra Mahasabha held a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here last evening and urged him to take steps for protection of the Majuli river island and the land of the Sattras - the seat of learning in the state from encroachment by illegal migrants from across the border.

The delegation also urged Dr Singh to initiate direct peace talks with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) towards bringing permanent peace in the region, said a spokesman for the Sattra Mahasabha.
