High Court upholds life sentence
Kolkata, Nov 29 (UNI) A two-judge bench of Calcutta High Court today upheld the life sentence of a man convicted of killing his mother and elder brother about five years ago.
Subhashis Mondal, aged about 35 years, killed his mother and elder brother in their railway quarters in Kharagapur on August 31, 2001.
Government pleader Minoti Gomes said Subhashis, a resident of the city's southern part, was convicted by the trial court " on circumstantial" evidence and sentenced to life in prision on April 21, 2002.
Ms Gomes said the accused was arrested from his sister's residence in Kharagpur.
His sister Rupali testified before the trial saying that a silver chain which she had presented to Subhashis was found lying beside the body of her mother in the bathroom.
Police said the accused killed his elder brother Debashis , a railway employee , in his sleep by hitting a stone on his head.
Then he attacked his mother Bithika and stabbed her to death, police said adding 19 knife injuries was found on her body.
The bench comprising Justice Tapas Kumar Giri and Justice Aloke Kumar Basu reaffirmed the verdict on an appeal of the accused challenging the judgement and praying for bail.
