Beautification works on at Imphal for PM's visit
Imphal, Nov 29 (UNI) The city is being spruced up and security has been tightened in view of the scheduled visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh this Saturday.
Officials said the exact schedule of the Prime Minister was not known and Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh was camping in New Delhi to discuss the matter. Dr Singh was earlier scheduled to visit Manipur on November 27 but it was postponed.
A 72-member team of Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel, led by its DIG, arrived here yesterday. He began overseeing the security arrangements.
The Manipur government had urged the Prime Minister to lay the foundation stones of the controversial Tipaimukh Multipurpose Project, Loktak downstream project, National Sports Academy, Cultural cum City Convention Centre, Manipur Institute of Technology and National Institute of Technology.
The Tipaimukh dam project, to be undertaken by the North East Electric Power Corporation, had received flak from various organisations which turned out violent at Tamenglong district.
In view of the visit police has started intensifying counter insurgency operations and frisking operations at various parts of the state.
