Barnala presides over University Convocation
Vellore, Tamil Nadu, Nov 29 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Governor and Chancellor Surjit Singh Barnala today presided over the second Convocation function of the Tiruvalluvar University and presented Certificates and Gold Medals to the students here.
The University Vice-Chancellor L Kannan, welcomed the gathering and spoke on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was taking steps to promote women's education in the State.
Mr Ponmudi said a marriage assistance of Rs 1000 would be provided for women, who completed standard ten. In other states in India, only seven per cent of students were going in for higher education.
But in Tamil Nadu 40 per cent of the students were going in for higher studies, he added.
The Minister said every individual should have basic education.
Gone were the days when the people were relying on Government jobs.
It was indeed a welcome sign that youth were opting for self-employment, he added.
