Church leaders, NGOs to reform old Mizo customs

Aizawl, Nov 28 (UNI) The Church leaders and a a few NGOs have stressed on the reformation of the ostentatious customs of the Mizo society.

In a recent meeting the church leaders and NGOs said the present marriage rituals and funeral rites needs to be reformed.

''Since marriages and funerals are expensive affairs, the meeting has recommended the approaches to cut down the costs for the families involved,'' the leaders said.

Criticising the ongoing dowry practice, the meeting also decided to curb the practice keeping in view the poor ones.

It further disapproved of the practice of attirement costs going towards the groom's expenses and suggested that the cost of bridal gowns and other dresses worn by the bride should go to the bride's family.

The practice of offering artificial flowers to the dead should be stopped as these flowers could cause some environmental problems.
