AISPLB 'Nikahnama' rejected by shias in Kargil
Kargil, Nov 28 (UNI) This Shia-dominated town has rejected the model 'Nikahnama' adopted by the All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB), which provides a Muslim woman with a right to divorce.
Even the sunnis have rejected it saying the Nikahnama was against the Islamic law.
Imam Khomani Memorial Trust (IKMT) chairman Sheikh Mohammad Mukeek and Islamia High School, Kargil, president Sheikh Ahmad Mohammadi rejected it saying, Islam has given women the right to marry to any person of their choice but she has no right to divorce.
The shias in Kargil and other areas of Ladakh region have also rejected the new marriage document, they said adding a true Muslim cannot act against the teachings of holy Quran.
Sheikh Mohammad Mukeek said the AISPLB decision was against the Islamic rules. Only the man has right to divorce under Islamic law, he said.
A shia councillor in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, Mirzia Bano said AISPLB has no right to subvert the Muslim laws.
A sunni ulema (scholar) Hafiz Abrar Alam said it was against the teachings of Quran and Prophet Mohammad.
The AISPLB adopted a model 'Nikahnama' on November 26 at Mumbai, which is claimed to protect women not only in case of domestic violence but also provide security if the situation of a divorce arises.
Founder member and executive committe member of AISPLB Akhtar Hasan Rizvi said, ''Women are the weaker sex and need protection.
It is for them, that the model Nikahnama has been adopted and it should be made universal. People from all the religions should study it and see if it is ideal for adoption or not.'' UNI XC/BAS YA BD1745
