Indore, Nov 27: Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) measurements have warned that the basement of the Great Himalayas and Uttranchal state is under threat of mega earthquake equivalent to 8.4 to 8.6 magnitude, the deadliest in the last 1000 years.

This research has been conducted by Dr Roger Bilham of Colorado University and Dr Nicole Feldi of England and a part of it has been published in the world famous Research Journal ''Nature'' in its current issue.

Dr Ram S Shrivastava, a well-known Scientist, has forwarded these findings to President A P J Abdul Kalam with the request to take the this matter very seriously.

"''It is better to prepare ourselves for any such incidents which is overdue," he added.

The Scientist told the mega earthquake predicted will be repeating the history of 1897 earthquake of Asom which caused part of the Shillong plateau shoot up in the sky just in three seconds claiming several thousand lives and reduced all masonry building in the entire region into a rubble roughly to the size of England.

He said the main reason of earthquakes in the region was the movement of Indian plate.

Dr Shrivastava told the GPS data indicated that there was a 50-km wide region centered on the southern edge of the Tibet Plateau absorbing 80 per cent of the strain energy. The important inference was that the Himalayan region had not raptured so far and the GPS observation showed that there was a slip movement of nearly 10 metres, which appeared to be the critical and account for more than 8.3 magnitude earthquake.

He also asked the Army, deployed on mountalins, to be ready to for relief and rescue operations.
