Musician B V Raman passes away

Chennai, Nov 27 (UNI) Sangeet Natak Academy awardee and eminent Carnatic musician B V Raman died here today after a brief illness, family sources said.

He was 86.

Raman, along with his twin brother late B V Lakshmanan, had done yeoman service in the field of Carnatic music for over six decades.

After serving 'Gurukulavasam' under the famous 'Tiger' Varadhachariar, BVR and BVL, as they were affectionately called, developed a style that was deep rooted in tradition, but innovative through exploration.

They had vast repertoire and were known for their rendition of rare ragas like 'Chaya Gaula' and 'Supradeepa,' which became standard references for several compositions not frequently handled.

Recepients of several awards including the Sangeet Natak Academy and Sangeet Kala Acharya, the brothers had served as Asthana Vidwans of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam and were ardent devotees of Paramacharya.

They had been conducting a festival in honour of compose Sadasiva Brahmendra for the last 25 years at Manamadurai.
