Lorry owners to file contempt petition against Transport Dept
Bangalore, Nov 27 (UNI) The Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners Association has decided to file a contempt of court petition against the State Transport Department for failing to implement the Supreme Court directive to curb the overloading menace in the state.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Association President B Channa Reddy accused the Transport department officials of not initiating action against the trucks carrying beyond the stipulated load in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act after collecting huge sums of money from the offenders.
He said that despite the Association's appeal to the department and the Supreme Court's direction to ensure strict enforcement of Motor Vehicles rules, the illegal collection of funds from the violating truck operators was continuing.
Mr Reddy said that due to overloading, the condition of roads especially in Northern Karnataka were damaged beyond repair. ''Due to a few hundred inspectors' illegal acts, the state is losing thousands of crores of public money in repairing and upkeeping the state roads and highways.'' UNI MV GD DKA KN1612
