KOA to honour upcoming sportspersons

Bangalore, Nov 27 (UNI) The Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA) will honour 21 people, including 15 outstanding sportspersons, for their achievements and bringing laurels to the State.

Announcing this at a press conference here, KOA President K Govindaraj said the KOA had instituted cash awards for state teams that win national championships in various disciplines. It would also extend financial help to former sportspersons in need of help or those who suffered from ailment.

The award carried a citation and a cash prize of Rs 10,000.

Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph would give away the awards at a function here on November 30, he added.

Following were the KOA award winners for 2006: G Bindu Rani (athletics), Srinivasa Naik (basketball), L J Charles (fencing), G Gangadhara (Kho-Kho), Kruthika K K (hockey), Rohit Rajendra (swimming), Varsha Bende (taekwondo), Sharadha Siddi (weight lifting), G M Nischitha (badminton), Laxman M Teredal (cycling), S Venkatesh (football), Vickram Kanth (hockey), C Purushotham (shooting), S Sahana (table tennis) and Rohan Bopanna (tennis).

M Ramesh Parameshwaran (hockey coach), M K Narasimhan (basketball referee), M A Ponnappa, P R Viswanathan and K Eshwara Rao (all sports journalists) and Shrenik N Baldota (sports promoter).
