DPI attempts to burn minister's effigy
Chennai, Nov 27 (UNI) Nearly 30 activists from the Dalit Panthers of India were arrested when they attempted to burn an effigy of Union Minister and senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar for inviting Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse to his daughter's wedding in New Delhi.
The police said the activists, carrying the effigy, assembled near the statue of rationalist leader E V R Periyar but were arrested when they attempted to burn it.
They were released later.
DPI also expressed its opposition to the visit of Mr Rajapakse to India in view of the killing of innocent Tamils in the island nation.
