Construction workers to get IGNOU certificates

Bhopal, Nov 27 (UNI) Skilled construction workers will now be awarded certificates by the Indira Gandhi National Open University in collaboration with the Construction Industry Development Council, which was promoted jointly by the Planning Commission and the Indian construction industry.

Under an MoU signed with the Madhya Pradesh government, the CIDC would utilise the resources in 16 Industrial Training Institutes transferred to it for skill testing and imparting training to workers. IGNOU issues certificates after the CIDC tests and certifies the skills.

As many as 45 types of skills like electric fitting, carpentry, wall painting, welding, brick making, bar bending, masonry, plastering, store keeping, construction site supervision, electric wiring, stone cutting and plumbing are tested.

Of the total 4,000 construction workers tested by the CIDC in eight districts covered under the Madhya Pradesh Rural Livelihood Project, certificates were given to about 1100 workers, official sources said today.

A team of CIDC training officials is currently on a visit to the MPRLP districts holding a series of dialogues with the senior district officials of construction departments and also local bodies of contractors.
