Clinton to visit tsunami-hit areas in TN

Chennai, Nov 27: Former United States President Bill Clinton is scheduled to visit Cuddalore, one of the worst-hit districts in Tamil Nadu in the 2004 tsunami, on December one.

Mr Clinton, in his new role as the UN Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery, would fly down to Thazhanguda village, about 20 km from Cuddalore town, and interact with tsunami survivors housed in temporary shelters, UN sources said.

He would also interact with tsunami-affected children, for whom UN agencies like UNICEF were providing psychological care and support programmes.

Mr Clinton would spend about two hours in the village where the tsunami orphaned 480 children and widowed 787 women.

This would be Mr Clinton's second visit to tsunami-affected places in Tamil Nadu, after he paid a visit to the worst-hit Nagapattinam district in May last year.

Besides interacting with NGOs and listening to tragic stories of tsunami survivors, he also played with tsunami-affected children in Nagapattinam.
