Centre to develop science and technology in Arunachal

Itanagar, Nov 27 (UNI) Lok Sabha MP Kiren Rijiju today said the Centre has decided to develop science education and its allied sectors including bamboo processing and disaster management in Arunachal Pradesh. The Science and Technology department (DST) would upgrade the science laboratories in selected colleges, Rajiv Gandhi University and re-training of science teachers in the state, sources said.

Mr Rijiju said quoting Union Science and Technology minister Kapil Sibal that 22 CSIR journals would be provided to these institutions free of cost.

The DST would carry out two projects for documentation of traditional medicinal practices based on indigenous herbs and plants, Mr Rijiju said.

He further said the DST and National Mission on Bamboo Authority (NMBA) also study the access and regulatory regime for bamboo in the state.

The gasification of bamboo for electricity also got approval for establishing a 25 KW fabricated gasifier with producer gas engine at Namsai in Lohit district, he added.

The department would also support a programme for induction of six bamboo gasifier in 2007 to provide electricity to the villages, he said.
