Agra's Vishal Mega Mart gutted

Agra, Nov 27 (UNI) A major fire gutted the departmental store of a leading national retail chain here early today.

Police said fire engulfed Vishal Mega Mart near Kanpur-Agra Highway around 0330 hrs, gutting property worth several crores of rupees.

It took over five hours for the fire-fighters to control the inferno. Fire fighting vehicles from the Army and Air Force also pitched in to control the blaze. There were, however, no reports of any casualties.

A short-circuit in the wiring is prima facie, believed, to be the reason behind the incident.

According to police, the Mart did not get its plan passed from the Agra Development Authority.

The incident brought forth memories of the Meerut inferno in April this year, which left over 75 people dead.

Meerut's Victoria Park was the venue of a large consumer fair, when a short-circuit resulted in fire.
