Woman arrested for torturing four-year-old girl

Salem, Nov 26 (UNI) A 45-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly torturing a four-year-old girl, adopted by her seven months ago, at Athur in this district of Tamil Nadu today.

The woman had adopted the girl on April eight last from Anand Ashram in neighbouring Krishnagiri district where she was studying LKG.

The Ashram had taken the girl from the Government Cradle Baby scheme in Dharmapuri when she was seven-months-old.

The action followed complaints by the woman's neighbours to the State Human Rights Commission, which in turn directed the Revenue Divisional Officer, Athur, Bhaskarapandian to conduct an inquiry.

Mr Bhaskarapandian told UNI here today that the girl was admitted to the Government Hospital Athur for treatment of burn wounds.

The child had about 30 burn wounds on her body inflicted by the woman using hot iron rods, he added.

He said police had registered a case and arrested the woman, Bhuvaneswari.

The girl would be sent back to the Ashram, which had expressed its willingness to take back the child after treatment.
