A tribute to 'Gandhi' at IFFI

Panaji, Nov 25 (UNI) Richard Attenborough's much-acclaimed ''Gandhi'' was screened at the International Film Festival of India(IFFI) here today as part of the centenary celebration of the Satyagraha Movement.

The film inaugurated the ''NFDC Down the Ages'' section of the IFFI.

The function was attended by prominent people who were part of the film like actors Rohini Hattangadi and Sir Alyque Padamsee and costume designer Bhanu Athaiyya besides NFDC Chairman Manmohan Shetty.

Winner of eight Oscar awards, the film spans 56 of the 79 years of Gandhiji's life. It is a fascinating biography of the great leader and a thrilling story of his struggle to win freedom for India through non-violence and spiritual force.

Under the ''NFDC Down the Ages'' section, six films will be screened. The other films are 'Agantuk' (Bengali) directed by Satyajit Ray, 'Mangamma' (Malayalam) by T V Chandran, Marupakam (Tamil) by K S Sethu Madhavan and Hindi movies 'Mirch Masala' dircted by Ketan Mehta and 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron' by Kundan Shah.
