Three-day seminar for athletics technical officials gets underway

Pune, Nov 24 (UNI) A three-day seminar for athletics technical officials, hosted by the Maharashtra Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA), got underway here today.

The seminar has been organised to update the knowledge of the athletics technical officials who have passed their written and practical examinations held earlier.

As many as 500 officials from 30 affiliated districts of the MAAA are attending the three-day seminar which was inaugurated by the visiting Kenyan coach Paul Nutwii here today. Noted technical official Jaiprakash Surana presided over the function.

The MAAA is a premier unit of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and has a team of best qualified technical officials who are invited to conduct all international events held in the country.

''We have to be not only the best but competent enough to match the officials from the foreign countries while hosting the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games,'' said MAAA secretary general Pralhad Sawant.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Nutwii pointed out that since the 2008 CYG will be attracting participation from 71 countries, the role of technical officials is very important and there could be no room for errors. The three-day seminar will go a long way in updating the knowledge of the officials, Mr Nutwii said.

National referee and judge Baptist D'Souza delivered a talk on the ''Behaviour of officials on and off the ground''. Another veteran, Ram Bhagwat, spoke on '' Tournament Programming''.

Maj Prabhu Dayal from the Army Sports Institute (ASI) addressed the officials on preparation of the ''Tournament Manual'', while noted coach and Dadoji Kondev awardee Suresh Gujarati gave a talk on the ensuing international athletic meets in the country. Mr Shriram Shinde spoke about the co-ordination between officials and the media.

The three-day seminar will conclude with a practical session to be held at the newly-founded Baburao Sanas ground after the prize distribution ceremony of the Pune International Marathon to be held on Sunday.
