Police open fire to control mob violence in Vadodara
Vadodara, Nov 24 (UNI) Police today fired five rounds in the air to disperse an irate mob following the death of a 30-year-old man in a road accident at Gotri.
The trouble began when the man, identified as Sanjay Patanwadi, was knocked down and crushed to death by a truck while riding a bicycle. His father riding on the pillion was seriously injured.
Immediately, the mob set the truck on fire and indulged in heavy stone throwing and clashed with the police demanding that the body of the deceased be handed over to them.
After resorting to mild lathicharge, the police fired five rounds in the air to quell the mob.
The situation, however, turned volatile when police allegedly assaulted local BJP corporator Mahesh Bhatt when he intervened and opposed police action on the innocent people gathered on the spot.
On hearing the news, a top government official Jitendra Sukhadia and Mayor Sunil Solanki rushed to the troubled area.
Mr Sukhadia strongly condemned the police excesses.
Police said the situation was under control tonight and the driver has been arrested.
