Orissa to set up special security wing to protect VIPs-Naveen

Bhubaneswar, Nov 24 (UNI) A special security wing will be created in Orissa police to protect the VIPs and safeguard vital installations, in the state, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced in the Assembly today.

Replying to the debate on the expenditure relating to Home Department, Mr Patnaik said the state government would recruit 1052 ex-servicemen on contract basis to be posted in naxalite-domiated areas for two years.

He said the government would also fill up all the 6011 vacant posts, including 915 in the 83 police stations located in the Left wing ultras infested areas to combat the naxalites.

The Chief Minister claimed that the naxalite activities in Orissa were much less compared to the neighbouring states.

He said during the year 36 naxalite-related incidents was reported in the state in which three civilians, four policemen and 18 naxalites were killed.

Whereas Chhattisgarh had reported 560 incidents and 341 casualties, while in Jharkhand 91 were killed in 328 naxalite-related incidents in the same period.

Thirty-six person were killed in the Andhra Pradesh and Bihar due to naxalite activites, Mr Patnaik remarked.

He said the government had taken several pro active measures to check the atrocities on women, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, adding several civic action programmes were undertaken in the naxalite-dominated areas.

The Chief Minister said the cognizable offences in the state was found to be less compared to the national average and claimed that crime rate had been reduced.

He announced that several incentives like increasing allotment of fuel, body carrying charges, enhancement of imprest and provision of emergent stationary requirements for the police stations in rural, urban and naxalite-dominated areas had taken place.

The Chief Minister also informed the House that Officer in-charge and Inspector in-charge in rural police station would be paid Rs 300 per month towards mobile phone expenses, while the amount would be fixed at Rs 500 for them in the urban police station.
