New scheme to protect old monuments launched

Mumbai, Nov 24 (UNI) The Maharashtra government today launched a scheme for protection of old monuments, like forts and caves and religious places, with private participation.

Talking to reporters here, Cultural Affairs Minister Ashok Chavan said the scheme, to be called 'State's Memorial Protection Scheme', will cover 244 monuments, including five forts and Banganga dam.

Mr Chavan said the Cabinet had approved the scheme and any institution, person or organisation would be allowed to take over the maintenance of the 244 monuments for five years and also allowed to charge entry fee for the same.

He said an advisory committee will be instituted, which will oversee the implementation of the scheme.

Five forts including St George, Bandra and Dharavi will be covered under the scheme.
