Chennai, Nov 24 (UNI) Janata Party President Dr Subramanian Swamy today said his party felt Chief Minister M Karunanidhi must withdraw support to the UPA government at the Centre if it did not force Kerala to comply with the apex court direction to raise water level in the Mullaperiyar dam to 142 ft from the present 136 ft.

Addressing a press conference here, Dr Swamy, who has been criticising the Tamil Nadu government for not complying with the Supreme Court direction and raising the water level, said Mr Karunanidhi had threatened Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the DMK-led DPA would pull out of the UPA if the Centre privatised the Neveli Lignite Corporation (NLC).

''The Centre gave in to his warning and desisted from its decision of privatising NLC, which only involved the interest of about 300 workers. But why is Mr Karunanidhi not bothered about the interest of about two lakh farmers and not pressurising the Centre on the dam issue?'' Dr Swamy said.

He said in the upcoming meeting on November 29 at Delhi with the Kerala government under the auspices of the Centre, Mr Karunanidhi must firmly tell the Prime Minister that the DPA would withdraw if it did not facilitate raising the water level in the dam.

Dr Swamy also claimed that during the All Party meeting, which Mr Karunanidhi convened here recently on the issue, he had assured him that he would tell Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the DPA would pull out of UPA.

''I don't know if he has written to the Prime Minister after that meeting. But he should tell the him during the November 29 talks,'' Dr Swamy said.

Meanwhile, Dr Swamy also announced that the Janata Party would launch an agitation demanding resignation of DMK party from the UPA governemnt on January 14 - Pongal festival day, if it did not by then, close the shutters of the dam to raise the water level as per the Supreme Court orders.

Dr Swamy said several MPs from Kerala and the state's Water Resources Minister met him in Parliament yesterday and discussed the dam issue.

They have told him that the DMK government in Tamil Nadu would ultimately compromise on the issue at UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi's behest. In doing so, he would betray the farmers, Dr Swamy said.
