Chennai, Nov 24: Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon today met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and apprised him of the ''fruitful talks'' he had with Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse.

National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, who flew down from New Delhi, was also present at the meeting held ahead of Mr Rajapakse's visit to India from November 26.

Mr Menon, who arrived here from Colombo after meeting Mr Rajapakse and other officials, met Mr Karunanidhi on the advice of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The Prime Minister had deputed Mr Menon to Colombo to discuss the current situation in the island nation amid reports that Sri Lankan army and airforce were indulging in attacks on Eelam Tamils.

Today's meeting assumed much significance especially in the wake of various political parties in Tamil Nadu, including Mr Karunanidhi himself, calling for a halt to the alleged killing of innocent Tamils by the Lankan government.
