Insurance scam accused surrenders
Jabalpur, Nov 24 (UNI) The prime accused in a case wherein people's limbs were amputated for obtaining 'motor accident' insurance and thereby earning profit, surrendered in a local court today.
Judicial Magistrate Anil Pathak accepted Dr Balkrishna Dang's surrender and remanded him to police custody until December 27 when the next hearing is scheduled. Last Friday, the bench ordered seizing of the accused's property.
Between August 2005 and June 2006, a gang comprising the physician and lawyers claimed a huge amount as insurance from a government company. With the connivance of the police and insurance officials, Dr Dang amputated legs of eight gangrene sufferers.
The scam was exposed by the Superintendent of Police, Jabalpur, and three police personnel were suspended. Two of the accused are absconding.
