Howrah bridge to welcome city guests with a colourful smile
Kolkata, Nov 24 (UNI) Changing its 63-year-old mundane steel face, the Howrah Bridge, the landmark gate to Kolkata, will now give a mega watt smile in evenings beckoning a radiant welcome to those entering the city of joy.
For the first time in its history, the world's busiest bridge, which has become synonimous with Kolkata, will be dazzling with 750 lights flown in from Netherlands and Germany.
The illumination programme, inaugurated by West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi yesterday, is expected to give a new look to the river front as well during the River Link Festival.
The illumination will change looks on special occasions when violet rays will be thrown out in the evening sky.
" We decided to illuminate the Howrah bridge to make it at par in look with other famous bridges in the world which look beautiful in the evenings, " Kolkata Port Trust Chairman A K Chanda said.
The project, costing Rs. 3.5 crore, is aided by the British Council working with schools in London and China.
