Cash prize, promotion for Mizo Boxer

Aizawl, Nov 24 (UNI) Mizoram government today announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh to Jenny R Lalremliani for winning the gold medal in the world women boxing championship held at New Delhi.

State Olympic Association in-charge B Vanlalhruaia told UNI here that Chief Minister Zoramthanga had decided to promote Jenny as Deputy Superintendent of Police for her performance.

State Amateur Boxing Association said the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation had promised an award of Rs three lakhs and the Centre is expected to award her about Rs ten lakhs.

''This is Jenny's first gold in an international event after becoming the champion in the Asian Women's Boxing Championships held in 2003,'' Mr Vanlalhruaia said .

Besides, Jenny had won the first in 2000 at the Seventh East India Boxing Women's Championships in Kolkata.

In 2001, Jenny won the gold in the first Women's National Championships in Chennaia. In this year only she first participated in an international event, the first Women's World Boxing Championships, in US.

Born in 1983 to a poor family in Dintar near here, Jenny works as an inspector with the state police and have risen to the rank of DSP so far due to her performances in the boxing world.

The state government would felicitate her on Monday here for her success.
