Thousands pay tributes on Gowari stampede anniversary

Nagpur, Nov 23 (UNI) The 12th anniversary of the Gowari stampede tragedy in Nagpur, in which over 100 people were killed, was observed with solemnity here today.

Thousands paid tributes to the victims at the Adivasi Shahid Gowari memorial, barely a few metres from the intersection where the tragedy occurred twelve years ago.

Maharashtra Minister for Animal Husbandry Anees Ahmed placed a wreath at the memorial as a mark of tribute. Sudhakar Gajbe, a leader of the Gowari community, was present.

District Collector Sanjay Mukherjee also placed a wreath at the memorial. He was accompanied by Deputy Collector Sunil Padole.

People came from Madhya Pradesh and several parts of Maharashtra to pay tributes.

Over 100 people had died in a stampede during a ''morcha'' taken out by members of the Gowari community to press their demands on November 23, 1994, while the Maharashtra Legislature was in session in the city.
