Kerala: Navy team inspects Mullaperiyar dam
Idukki (Kerala), Nov 23: A 17-member Naval team today began inspecting the Mullaperiyar dam on demand from the Kerala government to scientifically study the safety of the 110-year-old lime and mortar structure.
The naval team, on the demand from the Kerala government would also take stock of the safety of the dam, sources said.
The Left Democratic Front government had called the Navy for inspection as serious concerns were raised about the safety of the dam in case the water level went up beyond the danger mark.
Meanwhile, the water level at the dam stood at 138.4 today and Tamil Nadu had started releasing water on its side.
The rising of the water level beyond the danger level had raised concerns among the people living on the banks of the Periyar river, where the district administration had sounded a high alert.
