Gorbachev recovering well after surgery : Spokesman

Moscow, Nov 23 (UNI) Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev is recovering well after his carotid surgery at Grosshadern University Clinic in Munich.

The post-surgery period is going well, spokesman for the Gorbachev Foundation Vladimir Polyakov told mediapersons.

Mr Gorbachev, aged 75, was hospitalised on November 19. Doctors detected an internal carotid artery problem on the right hand side.

The carotid arteries are responsible for carrying oxigenenated blood to the brain.

An artery operation was perfomed on him yesterday to prevent a stroke.

At the beginning of last week, he underwent medical examination in an elite clinic in Moscow after he complained of fatigue because of his busy schedule of foreign trips.

The last Soviet leader had organized and was expected to attend the 7th international conference of Nobel Peace Prize winners in Rome November 17. The meeting was to focus on nuclear technologies.

However, he was advised by his doctors to cancel the trip to undergo a medical examination.

Mr Gorbachev's daughter, Irina, a doctor by training, is staying at her father's bedside, RIA news agency reported.
