Federation welcomes high court's efforts

Chennai, Nov 23 (UNI) The Federation of Chennai Corporation Small and Pavement Vendors association today hailed the efforts of Madras High Court for allocation of permanent shops.

Talking to newspersons here, T N Nambirajan and P Karunanidhi, President and general secretary respectively of the federation said that only because of the High Court's intervention, the authorities had started taking steps towards regulating the small and pavement vendors activities in the city, including issuing identity cards to them.

For the first time in the country, Madras High Court had done a great thing for the small and pavement vendors, they said and wanted that the authorities concerned should not allow any politician to intervene in the allotment of permament shops under any circumstances.

The High Court appointed committee could deal with the allotment of permanent shops for the pavement vendors, for which the federation would extend its cooperation, they added.

The federation leaders wanted the Chennai City Corporation to initiate action as per the High Court's direction for implementing the second scheme also for the benefit of pavement vendors who were left out in the first phase.

It might be recalled that on a public interest litigation, the High court appointed a fact finding committee headed by a retired High court judge. Based on the committee's recommendation, the court directed the authorities concerned to find a suitable permanent place for the pavement vendors before they were removed from different parts of the city.
