The three-km Disused Canal Road from Karkari Mor to MB Road in East Delhi would become operational by March 2007. The new road would take 40 per cent traffic burden off the busy Vikas Marg and hence decongest it substantially, Dr Walia said.

A new technology was being utilised for constructing this road that made the RCC used motorable within two hours of its laying. The road was being constructed over a drain and a two-metre wide opening would be left in centre for cleaning the drain. Two engineers would visit Germany to study mechanised cleaning drain through such an opening.

The Disused Canal Road would be four-laned and it would two service lanes and two footpaths on either side.

In order to provide relief to the normally choked Vikas Marg, while framing Delhi Master Plan 2001, it was decided that the existing Disused Canal could be converted into a traffic corridor and developed as a feeder to a new bridge over Yamuna near Geeta Colony.
